The first thing you need to get started charting is a basal themometer. That is one that instead of giving you a temp of 97.1 it tells you 97.19. You can find them at most drug stores and they aren't usually too expensive. Yes you can take your temp orally. It's kind of important to take your temp first thing in the morning before you get up or move around at all. Also you should try to take it at the same time everyday. If you are like me that isn't easy to do. This site has a temp corrector you can use to help keep your temps accurate. You will need either charting software online or a printed chart to mark your temps on each day. I would start charting at the first day of your next cycle (the first day of your period is cycle day 1). You can also keep track of your cervical mucus, and cervical position to track your fertility. I don't know too much about those but I'm sure you could find info on the web on what to look for there. Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

I think thirdtimesacharm gave you a lot of good info. I just wanted to say that charting can be time consuming but I think it's worth it. Don't give up if at first it seems like a waste of time. It takes a few months to really start seeing patterns and getting some helpful info from charting.
